From 3,000 Meters to the Sea: Tateyama and My Workshop To-Do List
There are few places in the world where you can look out to the sea from 3,000 meters above it. Japan has a few, but the scenery of Tateyama in my home prefecture of Toyama really is world-class. It strikes me all over again.
While tuning skis, I also enjoy bits of DIY as a change of pace. A few items on the to-do list are finally getting done!
Tuning
I couldn't finish the jobs I had in hand by the end of November (laugh). I keep tuning every day, and when I counted, I was down to about 50 boards. December brings a rush of new-ski tuning and last-minute requests. Thankfully, most of my work comes from returning customers, so the last-minute rush is smaller than you might expect. Probably...
The earthen storehouse workshop
Repairing the earthquake-cracked exterior wall; filling gaps in the sealant after plaster painting; adding molding to the sliding doors; installing an outdoor light; building a paint booth and router table; installing a second-floor stair door; leveling the grounds; building an outdoor shed; and repairing a handcart. I also want to make another outdoor table from the wood used for the sign.
Prototype boards
At this rate, I may not get to them this season either. Here are the projects, starting with the higher priorities:
- Mega-fat ski “darkmatter210”: perhaps 160 mm wide, black paint with a small window and a white silkscreen logo. Should the template be “Psycho”? A core using that zelkova and cedar, with either 2 mm of flat camber or full rocker.
- Second narrow ski, Type R: bubinga sidewalls, a veneer sheet, laser-engraved logo, and a thicker build. A magnolia and zelkova core, cut shaping, and powder rocker.
- Rebuild the snowboard: a “TOTAN” design in clear laser engraving or printed sheet. Cut the core, decide on the sidecut, and consider an atech and Douglas-fir wood beam. Add inserts to a sample board so it is easier to test ride.
- First metal-reinforced ski: a 173 cm carving ski, around 78 mm underfoot. Dyed fabric, all white, or clear titanal; a Douglas-fir core with thin zelkova strips.
- Touring ski: Tateyama cedar and carbon, 96 mm underfoot, aiming for under 1,500 g.
And the rest of the list
Update the templates for routing metal and plugs under bindings (two templates, toe and heel, may be best), and mill plug-plate stock in bubinga, wenge, beech, and mizunara. In the design and printing room: laser-engraving tests, clearing out unused things, workspace and insulation, roll printing, pigment ink, and AI design. The attic workshop needs a full stripping repair, and the press-room door needs molding.
For PR and the web: the website, about page, menu, order form, board-making page, official email, brochures, interview videos, tourism products, and stories. Digitally, I want a CAD-based ordering system, design guidelines, and a production roadmap. For tour programs, I'd like to develop ideas around my childhood self, an adventure among garden trees, Ana-no-tani and SBNR, and mountain faith. There are also wood tiles for the guest room, management, inbound pricing, a business plan, grants and loans, sales materials, telemark lessons and workshops, plus upgrades to the tuning-room machines, walls, and waxing setup.
