A Helping Hand for Wakka Shapes: Bending Wood for Skis

Uno came to lend a hand at the Wakka Shapes workshop. He left his job early because he wanted to do something fun, and he was interested in trying woodworking. Today we built a jig for bending wood used in ski construction.

Automated equipment like the kind used by large manufacturers requires a major investment. Bending wood means working with each piece and guiding it into the intended shape. A small garage workshop has to find its own way. We are making a jig ourselves: one that helps with the work while keeping the hands-on character of the process.

The structure we want to build with the jig is Wakka Shapes’ original “Kojirase Wood Beam Structure.” It takes extra work to bend and assemble the wooden beams. When we tested a sample on snow, I was surprised: even though the ski was wide, its edges held on hard ice and cut cleanly.

“A ski this wide can still grip on ice!” That experience was a major reason I decided to take ski making seriously. We’ll keep building something that a small workshop and its friends can make together. Thanks for your help, Uno!

秋の風と公開TODO — Wakka Shapesの次のプロジェクト

2026年9月11日

秋の風が吹くと、お客さんもたくさん来てくださるようになります。「今年はどうなりますかねー」「新しい板を買ったので届いたら持ってくるね」「去年は12月から滑れたよね」——そんな会話に、みんなのワクワクが伝わってきます。僕も楽しくなってきました。

チューンナップの仕事が忙しい季節ですが、夏の暑さで少し止まっていたプロジェクトも、涼しくなってきたのでギアを上げて進めていきます。

工房と道具づくり

土蔵工房の外壁補修や漆喰の仕上げ、引き戸のモール貼り、外灯や物置の設置。草刈りや剪定枝の片付けに加え、曲木用の治具や廃材燃料を使った煮炊きシステムも考えています。屋根裏工房ではプレスの補強やテンプレートの更新、3Dソール設計を進める予定です。

テスト板の製作

メガファットスキー、ナロースキー、スノーボード、メタル入りアルペンスキー、立山杉を使ったツアースキーなど、素材や構造の違う板を試作したい。8モデル12台を目標に、芯材やサイドウォール、ロッカー形状、グラフィックを考えていきます。

デザイン、発信、これから

レーザー刻印やロール印刷、シルクスクリーンのテスト、Webやパンフレット、インタビュー動画づくり。オーダーシステムや新しい修理・ワークショップメニューも進めたいことの一つです。やることは盛りだくさん。公開TODOとして書き出したものの、やらない項目もあるかもしれません（笑）。一つずつ、楽しく形にしていきます。

Autumn Is Here, and So Is My Public To-Do List

When autumn arrives, more customers come by the workshop. “I wonder what this season will be like,” “I bought new skis and will bring them in when they arrive,” and “We were skiing from December last year, weren’t we?”—everyone is getting excited, and I’m starting to feel that excitement too.

Tuning work is picking up, but now that the weather has cooled down, it’s time to get back to the projects that slowed down during the hot summer.

The workshop and tools

Plans include repairing the earthen-storehouse workshop’s exterior, finishing the plaster work, adding lighting and storage, clearing vines and brush, and making jigs for bent wood. In the attic workshop, I want to reinforce the press, update templates, and work on a 3D sole design.

Prototype skis and snowboards

I’m planning prototypes ranging from mega-fat and narrow skis to a rebuilt snowboard, a metal-reinforced alpine ski, and a touring ski built with Tateyama cedar. The goal is eight models and twelve boards, exploring different cores, sidewalls, rocker profiles, and graphics.

Design, sharing, and what comes next

Other ideas include laser engraving and printing tests, a better website and brochures, interview videos, an order system, and new repair and workshop services. It’s a long list—and I may not get to every item! I’ll keep working through it one enjoyable step at a time.

5000年のスキー文化をつなぐ

テレマークスキー仲間2人とバイクで野沢温泉へ。野沢温泉スキー博物館を訪れ、スキーの歴史に触れてきました。

特に印象に残ったのは、1980年代に開発された「ローテック」というビンディングです。現在のディナフィットTLTにつながる原型と聞き、「これが1980年代に作られていたのか」と驚きました。先人たちの試行錯誤が、いま使われている道具につながっています。

さらに衝撃だったのは、約5000年前のスキー。人はそれほど昔から雪の上を滑っていたのです。展示されていたのは、より速く、より遠くへ、より自由に滑るため、道具を作り、改良し、ときには常識を覆してきた人々の軌跡でした。

スキーは単なるスポーツではなく、人間が雪と向き合いながら育ててきた深い文化。博物館で、スキーに人生をささげた人たちの足跡を見て、バトンを渡されたような気持ちになりました。僕も次へつないでいきたい。スキーヤーはぜひスキー博物館へ！

Passing On 5,000 Years of Ski Culture

I rode to Nozawa Onsen with two telemark skiing friends and visited the Nozawa Onsen Ski Museum to explore the history of skiing.

One exhibit that stood out was the “Low-Tech” binding, developed in the 1980s and described as a precursor to today’s Dynafit TLT. I was amazed that it had been made back then. The experimentation of earlier pioneers lives on in the gear we use today.

Even more striking was a ski dating back around 5,000 years. People have been traveling over snow for a very long time. The museum traces generations of people who built and improved their equipment to go faster, farther, and with more freedom—sometimes overturning accepted ideas along the way.

Skiing is more than a sport; it is a deep culture shaped by people living with snow. Seeing the legacy of those who devoted their lives to skiing made me feel as if I had been handed a baton. I want to pass it on. Every skier should visit a ski museum!

「こんな道具があったらいいな」という発想を一人の人が形にし、それが大きなメーカーとつながり、世界中のスキーヤーが使う道具になる。かつて輸入販売していたDJIのドローンも、始まりはガレージでした。アウトドアの世界では、小さな工房から生まれたものが常識を変えることがあります。

僕自身もWakka Shapesというブランドで、ガレージからスキーを作っています。どんな未来につながるかは分かりません。それでも、小さな工房だからこそ既存の常識に縛られず、新しいものを生み出せる。5000年続くスキーの歴史の中で、道具を自ら作ってきた人たちのバトンを受け取ったつもりで、今日も板を作ります。スキーカルチャー最高！

Changing the World from a Garage

I rode to Nozawa Onsen with two telemark skiing friends and visited the Nozawa Onsen Ski Museum to explore ski history.

One exhibit that stayed with me was the “Low-Tech” binding, developed in the 1980s. A university student began making it by hand in a garage, then produced and sold it himself. A collaboration with Dynafit later brought it into production, and it evolved into the ultralight touring bindings widely used today.

An idea that began with one person asking, “Wouldn’t this be useful?” grew into equipment used by skiers around the world. DJI drones, which I once imported and sold, also began in a garage. Outdoor culture is full of small workshops creating things that can change an industry.

I build skis from my own small workshop under the Wakka Shapes name. I don’t know where this path will lead, but there is something exciting about making something new outside the conventions of a large manufacturer. The history of skiing stretches back thousands of years, and the baton passed down by people who made their own tools is still moving forward. I’ll keep building skis. Ski culture is the best!

30年目の相棒と、一枚ずつ向き合うチューンナップ

マシンのメンテナンスをしていたら、「この機械ももう30年か」とふと思いました。使いながら手入れして、自分の作業に合わせて改造してきた相棒。最新機種と比べて、時代遅れかなと不安になることもあります。

でも、以前、別のお店でチューンしてベースが出てしまった板をお預かりしたことがありました。機械が新しいかどうかだけではなく、その板の状態と、お客さんがどう滑りたいかを見て作業することが大切です。削りすぎられない板もあるし、アイスバーンが好きな人には手作業でエッジを調整することもあります。

作業の前には、お客さんとの会話を思い返します。どこで滑ったのか、どんな雪が好きなのか、どんな感触を求めているのか。一人ひとりのことを考えて、一枚ずつ向き合います。

料理人にたとえると、最新の厨房機器をそろえて3年の料理人と、道具を大切にしながら30年仕事をしてきた料理人。道具だけでは決まらないものがあります。お客さんから「また滑りに行ってきました」「板が走った」と声を聞けるのが、何よりうれしいです。

夏の休みを経て、今シーズンの作業は9月1日から始まります。工房にもぜひ遊びに来てください。機械はいつか買い替えることになるのかな……とは思いつつ、もう少し一緒にがんばってもらいます（笑）。

Thirty Years with a Trusted Tuning Machine

While maintaining my machine, I suddenly realized it has been with me for thirty years. I have cared for it and modified it to suit my work. Sometimes, when I see the latest machines, I wonder if mine has fallen behind.

But I once received a board whose base had been exposed after it was tuned at another shop. What matters is not simply how new the machine is. I need to look at the board's condition and understand how its owner wants to ride. Some bases cannot take much more grinding; for someone who loves icy conditions, I may make careful hand adjustments to the edges.

Before I begin, I think back to my conversations with each customer: where they ride, what kind of snow they like, and what feel they are looking for. I try to picture the person and give every board individual attention.

Think of cooking: a cook with three years of experience and the newest kitchen equipment, and a cook who has spent thirty years caring for their tools. The equipment alone does not determine the result. Hearing a customer say, “I went out again,” or “The board really ran,” is what makes me happiest.

After the summer break, this season's work starts on September 1. Please come visit the workshop. I know I may have to replace the machine someday, but for now, we'll keep going together (laugh).

工房の道具が完成！これからのスキーづくりTODO

集塵機能とスロット付きのトリマーテーブルが完成しました！8時間ほどかかったけれど、これで木くずを吸いながら作業できるし、溝も活用できる。テンプレートづくりや芯材加工がしやすくなりそうです。DIY木工も少しずつ腕が上がってきたかな。

今年は「裏年」。集客や宣伝をがんばる年というより、自分のスキーを作ること、試乗用の板を作ること、たまってきたTODOを片付けることに集中しています。朝は4時に起きて、少しずつ進めています。

やることはまだまだたくさん。土蔵工房の外壁や内装、外物置や道具まわりの整備。試作板はメガファット、ナロー、スノーボード、メタル入りスキー、立山杉とカーボンのツアースキー。テンプレートの更新、埋木用材の製材。デザイン・印刷スペースの片付けや断熱、レーザー刻印、ロールプリンタやインクの検討。屋根裏工房とプレスルームの修理も。

Webや広報、注文の仕組み、CADを使ったシステム、観光ツアーやワークショップなど、工房の外にも宿題があります。全部を一度に終わらせるのは無理なので、まずは道具と場所を整えて、目の前のものから取り組みます。

The Router Table Is Finished! A Big To-Do List for Ski Building

The router table with dust collection and a slot is finished! It took about eight hours. Now I can work while collecting the sawdust, and the slot should make the table more useful. Making templates and shaping ski cores ought to be easier. Maybe my DIY woodworking is improving little by little.

This is an “off year.” Instead of focusing on promotion and attracting customers, I'm putting my energy into building my own skis and demo skis, and clearing the to-do list that has been piling up. I get up at 4 a.m. and work through it a little at a time.

There is still plenty to do: repairs and improvements to the earthen-storehouse workshop, an outdoor shed, and the tools. Prototype skis include a mega-fat, a narrow ski, a snowboard, a metal-reinforced ski, and a touring ski made with Tateyama cedar and carbon. I also need to update templates and mill stock for binding plugs; clear and insulate the design and printing space; test laser engraving; and consider a roll printer and inks. The attic workshop and press room need repairs too.

Beyond the workshop, I have web and PR work, an ordering system, CAD-based tools, tourism programs, and workshops to develop. I can't finish it all at once, so first I'll get the tools and spaces in order and tackle what is in front of me.

スキーと農業、二つの季節を生きる — HAPPY TUNEの仕事

ありがたいご縁があり、今年もDJIの農業ドローンのインストラクターを務めています。夏は農業、冬はスキー。富山でこの二つの季節を行き来する暮らしを、気づけば25年ほど続けてきました。

僕にとってスキーは遊びです。冬は農業がないので、滑りに行き、自分の道具やチューンを試す時間にもなります。春になると今度は農業へ。4か月ほど農業にどっぷり入ると、スキーのことは頭からすっかり抜けてしまう（笑）。季節が切り替わるのが自分でもおもしろいです。

チューンナップは、プロスキーヤーだけのための仕事ではありません。ふだん働いて、休日にスキーを楽しむお客さんの板を預かる仕事です。専門の機械を使って、一台ずつ手入れをしてお返しする。その道具を任せてもらえることを大切にしています。スキーを楽しむ普通のお客さんを尊敬しています。

春は農作業が忙しく、チューンは雨の日に進めたり、9月から本格的に受け付けたりしています。HAPPY TUNEは地域のチューンナップルームとして、17年続けてきました。工房にいつもいるわけではありませんが、持ち込みや相談は歓迎です。毎日そこにいる店ではないので、来てくださるときは連絡をいただけるとうれしいです。

夏の農業と冬のスキー。どちらも自分にとって大事な仕事と暮らしです。支えてくださる皆さん、いつもありがとうございます。

Two Seasons: Skiing and Farming

Thanks to a generous connection, I’m once again an instructor for DJI agricultural drones. Summer is for farming and winter is for skiing. I have been moving between these two seasons in Toyama for about twenty-five years.

For me, skiing is recreation. In winter, when there is no farm work, I can go skiing and try out my own gear and tuning. Then spring arrives and I switch to agriculture. After about four months immersed in farm work, skiing has completely left my mind (laugh). It’s interesting how completely my focus changes with the seasons.

Ski tuning is not only a service for professional skiers. I take care of the equipment of people who work during the week and ski on their days off. I use specialized machines and tune each pair individually. I value the trust people place in me, and I have great respect for everyday skiers who make time to enjoy the snow.

Spring is busy on the farm, so I fit tuning in on rainy days and begin the main season in September. HAPPY TUNE has served this community as a local tuning room for seventeen years. I’m not always at the workshop, but you’re welcome to bring your gear or ask questions. Since I may not be there every day, please contact me before visiting.

Summer farming and winter skiing are both important parts of my work and life. Thank you, always, to everyone who supports me.

木の個性を束ねる、Wakka Shapesの拗らせビーム構造

変態の変態による、木工ワークショップ

2026年5月1日、Wakka Shapesの工房に、北海道の森林研究所で木材を扱う専門家が来訪。ケヤキの芯材をブックマッチし、友人たちが伐採した立山杉も、美しい柾目が出るように木取りしてもらいました。

私はオーダーに合わせて製材し、その後は芯材の外周を途切れない木材繊維でつなぐ、独自の「拗らせビーム構造」に仕上げていきます。今シーズンの滑走テストでは素晴らしいフィーリングが得られた構造。木の個性と仲間の技術が合わさった板の完成が待ち遠しいです。

変態同士は引き寄せ合う。そんな仲間たちと、まだ世の中にないスキーづくりに挑戦しています。

Woodworking with Like-Minded Makers

On May 1, 2026, a wood specialist from a Hokkaido forestry research institute visited the Wakka Shapes workshop. We prepared book-matched zelkova heartwood, along with Tateyama cedar harvested by friends and carefully milled to reveal beautiful straight grain.

After milling the wood to specification, the next step is our distinctive “twisted wood-beam structure,” which wraps the core in continuous wood fibers. It delivered an excellent feel in this season’s on-snow testing. I can’t wait to finish a ski shaped by the character of the wood and the skills of our friends.

Like-minded makers seem to find one another. Together, we keep working on skis that do not yet exist anywhere else.

工房の新シーズンと、スキーづくりのTODO

工房の新しいシーズンが始まりました！自作スキーのワークショップは、5月20日まで参加者を募集しています。定員まであと2名です。板づくりに興味がある方は、お気軽にお問い合わせください。

さて、今年も工房のTODOが盛りだくさん。土蔵工房では地震で傷んだ外壁の補修、塗装ブースやトリマーテーブルの製作、外構の整地や物置づくり。工房の設備や道具を整えながら、製作に使うテンプレートやプレスも見直していきます。

試作板も作りたい。メガファットスキー、ナロースキー、スノーボード、メタル入りのカービングスキー、立山杉を使ったツアースキー。それぞれ芯材や形、構造を考えています。印刷やデザインの作業場所、レーザー刻印などのテスト、Webや注文フォーム、広報の整備も必要です。

やりたいことを書き出すときりがないけれど、まずは優先順位をつけて、一つずつ手を動かします。ワークショップも含めて、今年の工房づくりを楽しんでいきます！

A New Workshop Season and a Long To-Do List

A new season has begun at the workshop! Registration is open for the ski-building workshop until May 20, and there are two places left. If you are interested in building your own skis, please get in touch.

As usual, the workshop to-do list is long. At the kura workshop, I want to repair earthquake damage to the exterior wall, build a spray booth and router table, level the yard, and put up an outdoor shed. I’ll also improve the equipment, tools, templates, and press used for building skis.

I want to make several prototypes: a mega-fat ski, a narrow ski, a snowboard, a metal-reinforced carving ski, and a touring ski using Tateyama cedar. Each one calls for different thoughts about the core, shape, and construction. I also need to improve the design and printing space, test laser engraving, and work on the website, order form, and other communications.

The list could go on forever, but I’ll set priorities and get to work one item at a time. I’m looking forward to building the workshop and running the ski-making sessions this year.

2026年3月3日に紹介したのは、スキーのエッジ移植と接着修理の事例です。修理は壊れた箇所を直すだけでなく、状態を見極め、接着の強度を確認しながら仕上げる創造的な作業。やり直しがきかない一発勝負でもあります。

そのため、作業のイメージが固まるまで時間をかけ、納期には余裕をいただいています。当時の投稿では、修理費用の目安を8,000〜10,000円、納期を約2週間として案内していました。価格・受付条件は変更されることがありますので、最新情報は公式ホームページでご確認ください。

当時は、修理のみではなく各種フルチューンナップ（7,000円〜）とあわせての依頼をお願いしていました。

Edge Replacement and Bonding Repair: Careful, Creative Work

On March 3, 2026, I shared a ski edge replacement and bonding repair. Repair is more than fixing a damaged spot: it requires assessing the board, planning the work, and checking the bond strength. It is creative work, and often a one-shot process with no room to redo it.

That is why I take time to visualize the repair before starting and ask for a flexible lead time. In the original post, I listed an estimate of ¥8,000–¥10,000 and about two weeks for delivery. Prices and acceptance conditions can change, so please check the official website for current information.

At the time, repair requests were accepted together with a full tune-up, listed from ¥7,000.

ステップソールチューンを再開 — 板をアップサイクル

問い合わせを多くいただいていたステップソールチューン、受付再開のお知らせです。使わなくなったスキーを加工して、雪上を歩くための板としてもう一度活用します。

2026年2月時点のご案内：11月・12月は受付できません。ステップ加工は4列で10,000円、ベーシックチューンは6,000円。5列目以降は1列につき1,000円追加です。センター幅70mmほどで約4列、センター幅100mmほどで約6列が目安ですが、板を確認してから加工内容と金額をご案内します。表示価格は税別、送料は別途です。遠方からのご依頼もお受けします。

発送時は原則としてビンディングを外してください。取り外し・再取り付けをご希望の場合は3,000円で対応しますが、古いビンディングはプラスチックの劣化などで破損することがあり、その場合の補償はできません。板や金具の状態を確認しながら進める加工ですので、事前にご相談ください。

使わなくなった板を捨てずに、歩くスキーとして新しい遊び方へ。料金や受付状況は変更される場合があります。最新情報はHAPPYのホームページをご確認ください。

Step-Sole Tuning Is Back: Give Unused Skis a New Life

After receiving many inquiries, step-sole tuning is available again. We modify unused skis so they can be used for walking on snow.

Information as of February 2026: I cannot accept these orders in November or December. The four-row step pattern costs ¥10,000, and a basic tune is ¥6,000. Each additional row is ¥1,000. A ski around 70 mm underfoot usually needs about four rows; around 100 mm, about six. I inspect each ski before confirming the work and price. Prices exclude tax and shipping. Orders from outside the area are welcome.

Please remove the bindings before shipping. If you would like me to remove and reinstall them, the charge is ¥3,000. Older binding plastic can be brittle and may break during removal; I cannot cover damage in that case. Please contact me first so we can discuss the ski and bindings.

Rather than throw away old skis, give them a new role as walking skis. Availability and prices may change, so please check the HAPPY website for current information.

板づくりの仲間と集う — 第二回ビルダーズミーティング

1/18 第二回ビルダーズミーティング。
当方が主催する板作りワークショップの仲間たちと、年に一回のミーティングです。

今年は告知なしのプライベート開催！！会場はあわすのスキー場。

去年は富山のメインゲレンデで開催しました。宣伝にはなるけれど、肝心の製作者の皆さんと一緒に滑って、お話しする時間がなかなか取れませんでした。

今年はゆっくり皆さんとお話しできて、とても良かったです。お話しの中には貴重なヒントだらけ。
