Good morning, and thank you so much for all the birthday wishes. Around this time of year I seem to become quite introspective. I had been feeling low because I was looking too closely at my own shortcomings, so everyone’s warm messages meant a great deal to me.
I thought I’d spend my birthday doing something I love. The weather was nice, so I considered going skiing, but I spent the morning lounging around watching a movie I’d borrowed. Then I thought, “The weather’s so nice—it’s a waste to stay in,” and went outside to fly my drone. I wanted to enjoy some leisure time, but in the end, wasn’t that work? That’s fine; there was never really a boundary between work and play for me.
Skiing, running a ski-tuning shop, flying radio-controlled helicopters; computers, cameras, video editing, and food development. By pursuing the things I love all the way, they became my work, and thanks to that I’m able to make a living.
I realized I’m really just a nerdy guy with glasses. Then I remembered that even as a child I preferred indoor hobbies to playing baseball outside. Looking back at myself, I see that I’m nothing but Nobita-kun. So, at the start of my 38th year, I decided to keep being a shy, introverted nerd and to keep “Nobita-ing” my way through life.
From April 1, I’m planning to start a video-filming business using drones. I want to make people’s work look cool and help those who are working hard. “Work Movies.” I also want to showcase rural communities in a cool way, from both the air and the ground. “Cool Countryside Movies.” Those will be the two main pillars, and I plan to put my own nerd power to work.
I bought a drone on a trial basis after hearing it could be profitable, but somehow it’s only taking me in directions that don’t make much money. That’s so like me that I find it funny. Professional equipment can quickly cost over one million yen, so it’s dangerous! Thankfully, I’ve already received several project requests. I want to make cool movies, and even on powder days I don’t feel like going skiing; instead I watch films and tinker with video-editing software, steadily building up my inner nerd power.
Local industries (agriculture, forestry, fisheries—and Toyama’s manufacturing is exciting too!) and tourism. These are the kinds of projects I want to film and share. I do all sorts of work, but my “happy country-living jack-of-all-trades” style hasn’t changed.
* Hyakusho literally means “one hundred surnames,” and here means a professional at everything.
I was born under a nerd’s star, so I can’t help that. This year, too, I’ll keep being “Nobita” in my own way. I hope you’ll stick with me! — Shingo Ihara
