Looking back on 2014 — Thank you for everything

I feel as though the year ended because something kept pushing me forward. Before I knew it, it was already the end of the year!

There were many times when I had no choice but to take on new things, unfamiliar things, and even things I disliked. “Well, I guess I’ll step up!” And that is how the year went by.

It was a very hectic year, but with help from so many people, I managed to get through everything and make it safely to the end. Thank you all so much.

I have plenty of shortcomings, but I hope you’ll stay with me next year too!

Well then, everyone, have a wonderful New Year☆

Ugh, I’ve caught a cold.

I meant to keep pushing through to the end of the year, but I’ve run out of steam...

I haven’t been at my best with interviews and work. I’m sorry for all the trouble I’ve caused everyone.

This year has felt fulfilling: on top of the work I’ve always done, I added making dressings!!

My body has finally given out! I’m going to sleep tonight!!

But the things I need to do won’t wait for me (laughs).

That’s what you’d call priceless!

Having no money is a wonderful thing.

Because it gives birth to ingenuity.

A story about the wood, quoted from my own post:

>>>

In the farmhouses of rural Toyama Prefecture, cedar trees are planted in the yards.

They are also planted in the scattered-village settlements.

They are the trees known locally as “kainyo.”

My grandfather and great-grandfather planted them to shield the homes from strong winds and to provide timber for building.

The trees had reached the age—about 50 to 60 years—when they were ready to be felled. Two years ago, I had them cut down, milled into lumber, and stored.

Locally grown wood and locally grown food: use what comes from the place.

People say that things grown in the same place are good for both the home and the body.

In the case of wood, trees raised in the same climate are said to fit naturally into their surroundings.

These days, imported timber can be cheaper, and felling the trees costs a lot, so kainyo trees are being used less often.

But I feel immense joy working at furniture made from the trees that grew on my own land.

Between the Medelke project, farming, HAPPY work, guide materials, and piles of books…

My study is a mess!

It needs a major overhaul or it will burst at the seams!! But I can’t afford to buy furniture, so I’m making my own shelves and desk (笑).

This is less a leisurely hobby and more a pretty urgent situation (笑).
I have a mountain of desk work piling up, and it’s bad! Some of it has to be done this month or the authorities will get me, so I’m in a pinch!

So far, I’ve only bought the shelf boards, and the materials have cost about ¥7,000.

For the rest, I’m making do with lumber milled from trees cut down in my garden.

It takes time and effort, but I think it’s going to turn out cute☆

Getting hung up on the little details must be an occupational hazard…
I’m not making any progress.

This morning I worked on clearing the grass in the garden. Since the mountain is right behind the house, this was a full-scale job with a brush cutter and a chainsaw. If I had pulled the weeds by hand, it would have taken days! (laughs)

I love nature, but sometimes it can be incredibly troublesome and frustrating. To live, we use gasoline and electricity, and we also apply pesticides.

Behind the house, Japanese mountain vegetables called yoshina (uwabamiso) grow in abundance. Our ancestors planted many medicinal herbs and edible wild plants on the property. I’m grateful for that.

Still, they had grown too much, so I cut them back vigorously (laughs). I hope to keep getting along well with nature from here on.

This morning I cleaned the irrigation channel. It is unusual these days because it has not been lined with concrete, so aquatic plants grow thickly and make the work tough.

I reach into the water and pull the weeds by hand. It takes about four hours to cover 100 meters (laughs).

I sometimes think it would be easier if the channel were concrete. But when the work is done and I see all the little fish, insects, and shellfish happily moving about, I think, “Well, it’s hard work, but this is fine!”

In a clean channel like this, the river snails that fireflies feed on can thrive, and the fireflies can live safely too. Please remember that behind the beautiful glow of fireflies is the hard work of farmers. ☆

My back hurts! My hands are cramping from pulling so many weeds! My hamstrings are so tight and sore!

Now I’m enjoying a hot bath and homemade plum wine with soda. It was another good day!

I was thinking about taxes while taking a bath.

How much tax revenue is generated when I receive ¥10,800 and buy an item priced at ¥10,800?

Suppose an income of ¥14,000 is taxed ¥3,200 in income tax, prefectural tax, municipal tax, and other charges, leaving ¥10,800 in hand.

Then I buy an item for ¥10,800 and pay ¥800 in 8% consumption tax.

Of the ¥10,000 list price, if the shop’s purchase cost is 60%, the shop’s sales margin is ¥4,000.

If ¥1,620 of that is spent on the shop’s upkeep and other expenses, the consumption tax on those expenses is ¥120.

Assume the recipient of the remaining ¥1,500 before tax pays ¥450 in income tax, at a hypothetical rate of 30%.

If ¥1,500 is treated as the shop worker’s wages, the worker pays ¥450 in income tax and related taxes at 30%.

If the remaining ¥880 is the shop’s profit, corporate and related taxes at 25% would be ¥220.

That covers the shop’s ¥4,000 share.

The wholesale price is ¥6,000, of which the shop paid ¥445 in consumption tax.

If ¥3,240 of the factory’s amount is spent on raw materials and other expenses, the consumption tax on those expenses is ¥240.

Assume the recipient of ¥3,000 before tax pays ¥900 in income tax at a hypothetical rate of 30%.

If ¥2,000 is treated as wages for the factory work, the worker pays ¥600 in income and related taxes at 30%.

If the remaining ¥760 is the factory’s profit, corporate and related taxes at 25% would be ¥190.

The total tax revenue generated when receiving ¥10,800 and buying an item priced at ¥10,800: ¥7,395.

Even if that ¥10,800 came from something like a pension, with no income tax applied, the tax revenue would still be ¥4,195.

Of course, some of the details in this calculation may be off, and not all of these taxes would necessarily apply in every case.

Still, spending ¥10,000 means ¥4,000 in taxes.

That fact gives me a lot to think about.

Every citizen pays this much tax. Shouldn’t we care about taxes and about how the government uses them?

How did I not realize something so obvious until now...? What an idiot (laughs).

It was so shocking that I nearly dropped the snack I was about to eat while driving!!

This morning I had a meeting with my accountant...

This is really not my strong suit. I dislike it so much that it gets me down... I start feeling like such a failure, and poor Shin-chan feels sad...

After going through all this trouble just to pay taxes, I want them to be used properly.

It makes no sense to build such an incomprehensibly complicated system that requires hiring an expert—and costs money—just to calculate what we owe, then impose fines if we fail to pay. Seriously, they need to rethink this!!!

It’s only natural that people who put care and heart into their work end up having to stay small. If paying taxes takes so much time and money, of course only products made by cutting costs everywhere will end up circulating.

Grrr!!

Still, surfing through life in Japan amid that delicate push and pull is part of the fun (laughs). If everyone were nice and perfect, it would be boring, right? (laughs)

And out of those struggles came two careful, handmade ventures: “Medeluke” and “Happytune.” What a cool thing to do!! If I may say so myself. They don’t make much money, but I love them!

All you can do is enjoy everything! Though right this moment, I’m mad!! (laughs)

Today I was invited to teach a high-school class.

The teacher asked me, “Shingo’s life is interesting—please come and tell my students about it!” So I went to teach a two-hour class.
(I wondered, “Are you sure I’m the right person?” The teacher said I could talk about anything... That’s crazy!)

I thought simply telling my story might come across as bragging and wouldn’t be very interesting, so, in true high-school style, I gave them a test instead.
I prepared it at the last minute, but somehow it worked out. I’m glad!

“What kind of person will you be, and what will you be doing, ten years from now?”

Whatever we do, the very first thing is to imagine it.
What we imagine can come true.
Whether we make it happen or give up is up to us.
We are responsible for everything in our lives, both the happy things and the not-so-happy things.

I hope some of that came across, along with how important it is.

I hope this gave the third-year students a chance to think about their own lives from that perspective. I spoke with all my heart, hoping they would picture a happy life for themselves. I got carried away with enthusiasm.

I wonder if I sounded preachy.
I wonder if they understood.
I hope it didn’t sound like a sermon.
I’d be happy if even one person got the message.

I guess I’m really turning into an old guy.

There was a lot on my mind, and it was a precious experience. I had a great time.
If I get the chance, I’d love to do it again!
Thanks so much!!

The logo combines the “M” in Medeluke with a pictograph representing satoyama. Because satoyama is a planted forest, the logo shows two trees.

Friends, thank you as always!! I’ve just invited you to like the Facebook page “Medeluke.”

I have recently become the representative of this organization. We currently sell a product called Satoyama Dressing, and we also plan tours to satoyama. Through these tours, I hope people can experience the wonderful ways of life, culture, and traditions of satoyama.

From the website: “We want to share with the world the appeal of rural local cuisine made with the bounty of the forest, such as wild plants, mushrooms, and game. We want people to experience and learn about the life, culture, and traditions of satoyama. With these hopes in mind, we develop products and plan tours. We believe the good old ways of satoyama life can inspire better lifestyles, and we work with ‘satoyama lifestyle’ as our guiding phrase.”

I hope this work will help create a new, HAPPY way of life in Japan. I want to keep proposing things I like through products. I believe “the countryside is wonderful as long as there is work,” and I hope to create even one job. I would also like to support people who move to the countryside with dreams and hopes.

I imagine many young people working energetically in abandoned farmland and neglected forests—stylishly and happily, of course! Starting from my hometown of Kamiichi, I hope to share this company’s way of working across Japan and inspire young people everywhere to work joyfully in forests and fields.

I look forward to that future for Japan with excitement. My dreams have always come true, and I’m sure they will continue to do so.

Please look forward to what’s ahead, and support and follow Medeluke’s activities on this Facebook page. Thank you very much.

Shingo Ihara, Representative, Medeluke

Maido!! (Thanks / hello!!)

Everything around us is like this, for a radius of about 30 meters. What is this place?! We’ve been blessed by the mountain’s wild-vegetable gods. I swear to those gods to keep this spot a secret.

A backcountry tour through satoyama, by motorcycle!

Thank you so much for buying the dressing!! I was all set to spend the day selling it, and headed to the dressing stall in my sales outfit. But at 10 a.m., right when sales began, a customer had come all the way from Shinminato just to buy our dressing. Sending them straight home would have made me a terrible guide…

I took them on a welcoming wild-plant gathering tour while riding around by motorcycle, and we stumbled upon a whole patch of koshiabura. We filled a supermarket bag in no time. Then I came to my senses and headed back to the stall (laughs).

I tossed asatsuki from our garden with that warabi dressing.
Delicious!!

For some reason, asatsuki has grown all over the garden this year!

Seri and pork stir-fry.

I used a Cookpad recipe as a reference, but perhaps it was meant for cultivated seri. The wild greens were so strong that my tongue hurt (laugh).

Maybe it’s good for detox? (laugh)

I stir-fried kogomi and the stems of butterbur sprouts and served them on rice vermicelli.
This was unbelievably tasty!

There are some brown parts on the kogomi, but I don’t mind at all (laugh).

Spring is such a fun time!!!
I’ve already enjoyed some kogomi fiddleheads.
I have so much fun that my enthusiasm for skiing suddenly disappears,
and I flip straight into farmer mode. Funny how that happens (laugh).
