Happy New Year — My 2026 Resolutions and To-Do List

Happy New Year! Work wasn’t quite wrapped up, but I’m taking it easy for the first three days of the year.

Last year was extremely busy—whether because there was too much to do, I was inefficient, or I took on too many new challenges. I steadily handled what needed to be done, and I feel I’ve built a foundation for welcoming more customers.

This is the Year of the Horse, said to bring great progress. Things will probably move forward quickly and get busy. So this year I’ll consciously rest, play, and have fun. My resolution is: “Keep myself cheerful and smiling so I can meet our customers’ needs!” Looking back, I was so busy last year that my smile faded.

This year I’d like to expand the HAPPY TUNE shop, adding a room to store skis and another for new equipment. Thank you for your continued support. Let’s go have fun together!

New Year To-Do List

Old Storehouse Workshop: Repair the earthquake-damaged exterior wall; seal gaps after plaster painting; add trim to sliding doors; install outdoor lights; build a paint booth and router table; install a second-floor stair door; level the grounds; build an outdoor shed; repair the handcart; and add an outdoor table using signboard lumber.

Prototype skis (I couldn’t make them this season; ⭐ = high priority):

  1. Mega-fat ski, darkmatter210, perhaps 160 mm waist: black paint with a window, white silkscreen logo, decide whether to use a psycho-shaped template, lightweight core and powder flex, 2 mm flat camber or full rocker.
  2. ⭐ Narrow Ski No. 2 Type R: bubinga sidewalls, veneer sheet, thick laser-engraved logo, magnolia and keyaki core, cut processing, powder rocker.
  3. Rebuild a snowboard: clear laser engraving or printed-sheet design; cut the “TOTAN” core; decide sidecut; Japanese ash and Douglas fir wood beam; add inserts to the sample board to make testing easier.
  4. ⭐ Metal alpine ski No. 1: 173 cm carving ski, about 78 mm waist; dyed fabric, all white, or clear titanal; Douglas fir and slim keyaki core, titanal top and bottom.
  5. Touring ski: Tateyama cedar and carbon, 96 mm waist, target under 1,500 g.

Templates: Update the template for metal under bindings and insert-hole routing; perhaps use separate toe and heel pieces. Mill insert plates (about 600 × 70 mm) from bubinga, wenge, beech, or mizunara oak.

Design and printing room: Test laser engraving, install insulation, test roll printing and AI design, test the roll printer, and test pigment-ink graphics.

Attic workshop: Full delamination repair and add door trim to the press room.

Website, PR, and marketing: Build out the website, produce flyers and brochures and interview videos, present the work as a tourism product, and create story content about wood.

Digital: Build a CAD-based ordering system for the standard course, explain design and file-submission points, and create a production schedule with a clear goal.

Tour program development: Develop tours called “My Childhood” and “An Adventure Among Garden Trees.” Plan the Ananotani SBNR tour, beginning with an itinerary. Develop a mountain-faith tour from Kurokawa village, learning about temples and artifacts excavated there and connecting them with ski ascents as a modern staff.

Shop expansion: Concrete floor and roof framing.

Management: Develop inbound-tourism programs, decide on a business plan, apply for financing, and prepare sales materials for inbound travel agencies.

Tuning workshop: Apply to replace machines and line the interior with plywood.

Thank You for a Full-Throttle 2025

Thank you all for your support throughout 2025. As in the year before, I feel I gave everything I had and lived the year to the fullest. I’m truly grateful.

The Year of the Snake is often associated with building stability through steady effort. Looking back, that feels fitting. I kept calmly and wholeheartedly doing what needed to be done, and suddenly the year was almost over. It’s hard to believe B'z made a surprise appearance on last year’s Kohaku music show a whole year ago. I can’t help wondering what I was doing all that time.

My heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported me. I wonder what the coming year will bring.

From 3,000 Meters to the Sea: Tateyama and My Workshop To-Do List

There are few places in the world where you can look out to the sea from 3,000 meters above it. Japan has a few, but the scenery of Tateyama in my home prefecture of Toyama really is world-class. It strikes me all over again.

While tuning skis, I also enjoy bits of DIY as a change of pace. A few items on the to-do list are finally getting done!

Tuning

I couldn't finish the jobs I had in hand by the end of November (laugh). I keep tuning every day, and when I counted, I was down to about 50 boards. December brings a rush of new-ski tuning and last-minute requests. Thankfully, most of my work comes from returning customers, so the last-minute rush is smaller than you might expect. Probably...

The earthen storehouse workshop

Repairing the earthquake-cracked exterior wall; filling gaps in the sealant after plaster painting; adding molding to the sliding doors; installing an outdoor light; building a paint booth and router table; installing a second-floor stair door; leveling the grounds; building an outdoor shed; and repairing a handcart. I also want to make another outdoor table from the wood used for the sign.

Prototype boards

At this rate, I may not get to them this season either. Here are the projects, starting with the higher priorities:

  1. Mega-fat ski “darkmatter210”: perhaps 160 mm wide, black paint with a small window and a white silkscreen logo. Should the template be “Psycho”? A core using that zelkova and cedar, with either 2 mm of flat camber or full rocker.
  2. Second narrow ski, Type R: bubinga sidewalls, a veneer sheet, laser-engraved logo, and a thicker build. A magnolia and zelkova core, cut shaping, and powder rocker.
  3. Rebuild the snowboard: a “TOTAN” design in clear laser engraving or printed sheet. Cut the core, decide on the sidecut, and consider an atech and Douglas-fir wood beam. Add inserts to a sample board so it is easier to test ride.
  4. First metal-reinforced ski: a 173 cm carving ski, around 78 mm underfoot. Dyed fabric, all white, or clear titanal; a Douglas-fir core with thin zelkova strips.
  5. Touring ski: Tateyama cedar and carbon, 96 mm underfoot, aiming for under 1,500 g.

And the rest of the list

Update the templates for routing metal and plugs under bindings (two templates, toe and heel, may be best), and mill plug-plate stock in bubinga, wenge, beech, and mizunara. In the design and printing room: laser-engraving tests, clearing out unused things, workspace and insulation, roll printing, pigment ink, and AI design. The attic workshop needs a full stripping repair, and the press-room door needs molding.

For PR and the web: the website, about page, menu, order form, board-making page, official email, brochures, interview videos, tourism products, and stories. Digitally, I want a CAD-based ordering system, design guidelines, and a production roadmap. For tour programs, I'd like to develop ideas around my childhood self, an adventure among garden trees, Ana-no-tani and SBNR, and mountain faith. There are also wood tiles for the guest room, management, inbound pricing, a business plan, grants and loans, sales materials, telemark lessons and workshops, plus upgrades to the tuning-room machines, walls, and waxing setup.

The second season of board building wrapped up on Sunday. Today, Master Uno is helping me turn the molds we have made so far into CAD drawings.

We have made 20 molds in all! We made a lot, thanks to everyone who joined as a monitor participant.

We plan to digitize eight ski molds and seven snowboard molds for future use. Board building is moving on to its next stage.

Autumn Ski Building Press Rush — Tuning and Workshop To-Dos

Autumn brings the temperature and humidity that are ideal for shaping resin, so guests are busy pressing their own skis!

Since late September, I’ve had no break, balancing ski tuning with the rush. I finally got a breather today, but the tuning rush is only beginning. My to-do list has barely moved. Will I get to build my own skis?

I couldn’t finish all current tuning orders in October, so I’ll keep tuning every day. The workshop list includes repairs to the old storehouse, building test skis and templates, setting up the design and printing room, web and marketing work, digital tools, tours, guest rooms, business planning, workshops, and improvements to the tuning room.

Tuning Lead Time and Our Hand-Finished Powder Tune

Hello!

Our current turnaround time is about one month. We also accept snowboard tuning orders.

Although we do not offer base structuring, we hand-finish the edges and apply wax. Our powder tune, finished with a special grinding belt, has been popular.
