「ハッピーな瞬間のお手伝い」— 冬の遊びに捧げる仕事

どう？？めっちゃかっこいいすよこの板！！ ワクワクしますね♪早く滑りたいっすね！めっちゃいい感じに仕上がりましたよ！今年は一緒に滑りましょう！どこどこ行きたいですね！

いつもベストを尽くして仕事をしてテンションMAXでお客さんにそう語りかけるのが好きだー。毎回そうしてる。時間かかっても割にあわなくても！そんな余計なこと考えないからできるんだろうけど。

これってでもよくよく考えたら自分の中で最高の出来栄えじゃないと言えないよね。意識してなかったけど、俺ってばいい仕事し続けてきたんだな。

ウィンタースポーツ業ってさレジャー産業だし賑やかしくて毎日遊んでるようなイメージなんだけど、やっぱり楽しく遊んで遊んでもらうためには、結構ストイックにやんなきゃいけなくてさ。

だって例えば、水道が破裂しました！すぐ来てください高くてもいいです。って時は自然と依頼が来るじゃないの。品質もともかくってなるし。レジャー産業は別になくても誰も死なないし、生きるために必要でもない。急いでもない。無駄な遊びなわけよ。

そんな中でわざわざお金払ってまでってなると余程の事だよねー。もっぱらうちのお客さんは、ウィンタースポーツしないと生きていけない人ばっかりだけど（笑）さらに辺鄙な場所にあるうちにわざわざ依頼してくれるって余程頑張らないとリピートしてもらえないよね！そらー全力っすよ！！

あらためてレジャー産業の使命を考えてみた。文化的な生活を楽しんで、仕事のストレスを癒して身体動かして健康になってよりハッピーで平和な社会生活を送るためのお手伝いですよね。

うちのコンセプト「ハッピーな瞬間のお手伝い」

滑る瞬間だけじゃないよな。滑ったあとも滑る前もだわ。なんで今日まで気づかなかったんだ俺。

とっておきの週末を楽しみにうちでチューンした板持って雪山に行く。滑ったあとも思い出して笑顔で人に優しくできる。些細なことなんて気にせず笑っていられる。世界平和や！社会貢献やな。

おし！おれの天職や。自信持っていこう！

“Helping Create Happy Moments” — A Life Devoted to Winter Sports

What do you think? This board looks so cool! It’s exciting—I can’t wait to ride it. It turned out great! Let’s ski together this year. Where should we go?

I love giving every job my best and speaking to customers with that kind of excitement. I do it every time, even if it takes longer than expected or isn’t especially profitable. Maybe I can do that because I don’t dwell on those extra concerns.

When I think about it, I could only say those things if the work had turned out as well as I could make it. I hadn’t realized it, but I’ve kept doing good work all along.

The winter sports business is part of the leisure industry. It may look lively, as if we’re having fun every day. But helping people enjoy themselves takes real discipline.

If someone’s water pipe bursts and they need help right away, they’ll call—even if it costs more. In leisure, on the other hand, no one dies without it. It isn’t essential for survival, and it isn’t urgent. It’s play, something we choose to do.

So choosing to pay for it takes a lot. Most of our customers feel they can’t live without winter sports (laughs). And when they go out of their way to bring their gear to our shop in such a remote place, we have to work hard to earn their return. We give it everything we’ve got!

I’ve been thinking again about the purpose of the leisure industry: to help people enjoy a culturally rich life, recover from work stress, stay active and healthy, and live happier, more peaceful lives.

Our concept is “Helping create happy moments.”

It’s not only the moment you’re skiing. It’s before and after, too. How did it take me this long to realize that?

You look forward to a special weekend, take your tuned skis to the mountains, and afterward remember it with a smile and treat people kindly. You can laugh without worrying about the little things. That’s world peace! That’s contributing to society.

All right! This is my calling. I’ll take confidence in it!

Building skis is a very happy kind of play, too. I designed these so people can smile about them even outside the snowy season. It’s art! It’s culture! I’m devoting myself to the winter sports business.

スキーの寿命を守るチューン — 必要十分な研磨と9月のTODO

9月に入ってモリモリと作業しております。

こちらの板は、他店様でチューンされてから当方へご依頼いただいたものですが、ここまでソールが薄くなるとリペアもソールの切り貼りもできなくなります。ソールの厚みは1.2から1.4mmが多いです。フラットにこだわるあまりガシガシ削ると、数回でチューン不能となります。

フラット研磨といっても、削れるのはたかだかこの1mmの範囲です。スノーボードはフラットなど無理というのはおわかり頂けると思います。その場合は歪みを計測しながら、手仕上げでエッジの角度を調整します（手仕上げコースのみ）。

レーシング板であれば短期決戦なので板の寿命を考えずに削ればよいのですが、フリーライド・BC板はできるだけ長く使いたいですよね。うちは「いい塩梅」「必要十分」で削り、神経質にリペアしたりフラットにこだわりすぎたりしません。ジャンルに合わせて最適なチューンをしています。

Todo更新：チューン依頼を9月中に完了。土蔵工房の補修・整備、新工房の使用契約、テスト板製作、テンプレート更新、デザイン・印刷部屋の整備、屋根裏工房修理、WEB・デジタルの整備、ツアーやゲストルーム、経営、スクール・ワークショップ、チューン工房の作業も進めます。

Tuning to Protect a Ski’s Lifespan — Just Enough Grinding and September To-Dos

I’ve been busy with all kinds of work since September began.

This ski came to me after being tuned elsewhere. When the base gets this thin, repairs and base patches are no longer possible. Most ski bases are about 1.2 to 1.4 mm thick. If you grind aggressively in pursuit of perfect flatness, the ski may become impossible to tune after only a few services.

Even with flat grinding, there is only about 1 mm of material to work with. As you can see, a snowboard cannot realistically be perfectly flat. In such cases, I measure the distortion and adjust the edge angles by hand (available only in the hand-finished course).

For racing skis, you might grind without worrying about lifespan because the goal is a short campaign. But freeride and backcountry skis should last as long as possible. We aim for a good balance and what is genuinely necessary. We don’t over-repair or obsess over flatness. We tune each ski for its discipline.

September to-dos include completing current tuning orders, workshop repairs, test skis and templates, improvements to the design and printing room, web and digital work, tours, guest rooms, business planning, workshops, and tuning-room upgrades.

夏の工房休業と、9月からのチューン再開

さて！8月も残すところ数日。工房はお休みですが受付だけはしております。

9月からは若干の値上げをさせていただきます。8/31は板作りのお客さんとテントサウナのため不在となり、8/30（土曜）の午後が値上げ前の最終受付となります。

さて9月からチューン仕事再開、頑張るぞっと！

Summer Workshop Closure and Tuning Work Resumes in September

There are only a few days left in August! The workshop is closed, but we are still accepting orders.

We will be making a slight price increase starting in September. I’ll be away on August 31 with board-building customers for a tent sauna session, so the last chance to drop off gear before the increase is Saturday afternoon, August 30.

We’ll get tuning work going again in September!

ヒグマの事故を受けて — 野生動物と人里の境界

ヒグマの事故を受けて

そういえばかつて森の素晴らしさを伝えたくて立山の入口の美女平で森ツアーをしていたころがあったんけど(過去はみんな黒歴史さ（笑）)

猿の集団が美女平駅周辺をうろうろしていて、観光客も面白がって餌付けをしたりするもんだからすっかり人慣れしていてね。俺は行き着く先は害獣駆除になることを知っていたので、全力で猿を威嚇して大声だして木の枝ぶん投げて怖がらせた事がある。引き連れていたお客さんはドン引きだったし、自然の素晴らしさを伝えるとか言ってるガイドが何してんの？って感じただろうと思う。

でもうちの家の裏にも農作物を狙って猿の集団が来るんだけど、やっぱりしっかり威嚇して怖がらせて人里との境界線を作るとしばらく被害はなくなる。相手は素晴らしい生命であり尊いんだろうけど動物は動物。大事な農作物を奪われると腹立つし言語はわからないから、やっぱりちゃんと俺が行動で怖がらせてちゃんと境界線を作ったほうがいいと思う。

具体的にどうするかというと、逃げ遅れた最後の1匹に狙いをつけて、最後の1匹が山に帰れなくなるくらい長い棒で追い詰めて、群れの仲間が山で悲しそうに行く末を見守るくらい徹底的に怖がらせる。長時間執拗にいじめる。徹底的に。もうここへ来てはいけないよ。くそみたいな酷いおっさんがいるよ。有害駆除されるよりマシだと信じていつもそんな感じでいじめてる。

うちの裏山には月の輪熊もでるんだけど、いちいち通報なんてしないし何回か見たけど俺は誰にも言わない。別に興奮もしない。普通のこと。誰かに言ってもめんどうだし熊も猿も猪も鹿も生きるのに必死で臆病なかわい子ちゃんだし、結局人間が一番怖いし。

世間の倫理観とか動物愛護とか知らんけど、俺はそんな感じで近所の野生動物と接して山村で生きている。ただそうしてるよってだけなんだけど大事なのは相手のことをよく知る事じゃないかな。なんでそういう行動にでたのか。どんな習性があるのか。その時期はどんなものを食べてるのか。子供を守るためにどんな行動にでるのか。知れば知るほど恐れは少なくなる。どう向き合えば良いかわかる。

先進国で人の生息圏に四つ足動物がいる珍しい自然環境である日本。動物達と上手に共存していけたらいいなと願う。

On the Brown Bear Incident — The Boundary Between Wildlife and Human Settlements

In response to the brown bear incident.

I once led forest tours at Bijodaira, near the entrance to Mt. Tateyama, hoping to share the wonders of the forest (though those days are all part of my dark history now, haha).

Groups of monkeys roamed near Bijodaira Station. Tourists sometimes fed them for fun, so they had become accustomed to people. Knowing that this could eventually lead to their being classified as pests and culled, I once did everything I could to frighten them away, shouting loudly and throwing branches. The guests with me were stunned; they probably wondered what a guide who talked about nature’s wonders was doing.

Groups of monkeys also come behind my house to target our crops. When I scare them away and establish a clear boundary between the village and their habitat, the damage stops for a while. They are precious living creatures, but they are still animals. It angers me when they take our crops, and they do not understand words, so I believe I need to make that boundary clear through my actions.

My approach is to focus on the last one that is slow to escape and drive it back toward the mountain with a long stick, frightening it thoroughly—even to the point where its troop watches from the mountain. I keep at it for a long time. Thoroughly. “Don’t come here again. There’s a lousy old man here.” I do this because I believe it is better than having them culled as pests.

Asiatic black bears also appear in the hills behind our house. I do not report every sighting; I have seen them several times and have not told anyone. It does not excite me. It is simply part of life here. It is a hassle to report, and bears, monkeys, wild boars, and deer are timid creatures doing their best to survive. In the end, humans are what they fear most.

I do not know about society’s ethics or animal-welfare ideals. This is how I live in a mountain village alongside the wildlife nearby. The important thing is to understand the other creature: Why did it behave that way? What are its habits? What does it eat at this time of year? How does it protect its young? The more we learn, the less afraid we become, and the better we understand how to respond.

Japan is a rare natural environment among developed countries, with four-legged wildlife living within human habitats. I hope we can find ways to coexist well with these animals.

8月はドローン農薬散布 — 工房を休み一つの仕事に集中

こんにちは！

8月は工房がお休みです。バカンスしてるわけではなくドローンで農薬散布をしています。こっちはこっちで実施だけでなく前段取りが重要なため集中して業務にあたっています。

なのでチューン関係の事は受付以外は何もしません。いろんなことをしているように見えて、実は実行しているときは一つの事しかしていませんのよ（笑）

さてドローン業務が終わった時用にTodo更新。色々閃いたし！

August Drone Spraying — Closing the Workshop to Focus on One Job

Hello!

The workshop is closed during August. I’m not on vacation; I’m spraying crops with a drone. The work requires careful preparation as well as the spraying itself, so I’m concentrating on the job.

That means I won’t handle tuning-related work beyond accepting orders. It may look like I do many different things, but when I’m working, I focus on one thing at a time (laughs).

I’ve updated my to-do list for when the drone work is done. I’ve had lots of ideas!

夏のチューン作業は早朝と夕方に — お客さんへの感謝

おはようございます！毎日暑いですね。

今朝も四時からチューン！
4:00から7:00
16:00から19:30
早朝と夕方しかしない。チューン作業は身体使うので、とても暑い。日中はのんびりしたり板作りしたりの日々。

山で冒険も楽しかったが、46歳の今は、自分が好きで始めたこの仕事と、好きすぎておかしくなって始めた板作りの仕事で娘たちを大学に行かせるぜ冒険を楽しんでます。

大好きなウィンタースポーツでご飯が食べれた上で子供を大学にまで行かせれるのはお客さんあってです。本当にありがとうございます。

うちは業販とかほとんどしていませんし、熱い店主さんたちとのお付き合いしかしていません。お客さん関係者各位お一人お一人の顔が浮かんできます。お一人お一人に生かされています。

先客万来商売繁盛ありがたやー。これからも顔が見える範囲で手のかけれる範囲でしかしません。今日も仕事を楽しみます。身体ばきばきです。

Summer Tuning Work in the Early Morning and Evening — Thanks to Our Customers

Good morning! It’s hot every day.

I was tuning skis again at four this morning!
4:00–7:00
16:00–19:30
I work only in the early morning and evening. Tuning is physical work, so the heat is intense. During the day, I take it easy or build skis.

I enjoyed adventures in the mountains, but now, at 46, I’m enjoying a new adventure: supporting my daughters through university with the work I chose because I love it, and with ski building, which I started because I love it so much I went a little crazy.

I can make a living from the winter sports I love and send my children to university thanks to our customers. Thank you so much.

We do very little wholesale and work with passionate shop owners. I can picture each of our customers and everyone connected to the shop. Every one of you helps keep us going.

We’re grateful for the many customers and thriving business. I’ll keep working only within the range where I can know people and give each job the care it deserves. I’m going to enjoy work today, too. My body is pretty beat up!
