On the Brown Bear Incident — The Boundary Between Wildlife and Human Settlements

In response to the brown bear incident.

I once led forest tours at Bijodaira, near the entrance to Mt. Tateyama, hoping to share the wonders of the forest (though those days are all part of my dark history now, haha).

Groups of monkeys roamed near Bijodaira Station. Tourists sometimes fed them for fun, so they had become accustomed to people. Knowing that this could eventually lead to their being classified as pests and culled, I once did everything I could to frighten them away, shouting loudly and throwing branches. The guests with me were stunned; they probably wondered what a guide who talked about nature’s wonders was doing.

Groups of monkeys also come behind my house to target our crops. When I scare them away and establish a clear boundary between the village and their habitat, the damage stops for a while. They are precious living creatures, but they are still animals. It angers me when they take our crops, and they do not understand words, so I believe I need to make that boundary clear through my actions.

My approach is to focus on the last one that is slow to escape and drive it back toward the mountain with a long stick, frightening it thoroughly—even to the point where its troop watches from the mountain. I keep at it for a long time. Thoroughly. “Don’t come here again. There’s a lousy old man here.” I do this because I believe it is better than having them culled as pests.

Asiatic black bears also appear in the hills behind our house. I do not report every sighting; I have seen them several times and have not told anyone. It does not excite me. It is simply part of life here. It is a hassle to report, and bears, monkeys, wild boars, and deer are timid creatures doing their best to survive. In the end, humans are what they fear most.

I do not know about society’s ethics or animal-welfare ideals. This is how I live in a mountain village alongside the wildlife nearby. The important thing is to understand the other creature: Why did it behave that way? What are its habits? What does it eat at this time of year? How does it protect its young? The more we learn, the less afraid we become, and the better we understand how to respond.

Japan is a rare natural environment among developed countries, with four-legged wildlife living within human habitats. I hope we can find ways to coexist well with these animals.

August Drone Spraying — Closing the Workshop to Focus on One Job

Hello!

The workshop is closed during August. I’m not on vacation; I’m spraying crops with a drone. The work requires careful preparation as well as the spraying itself, so I’m concentrating on the job.

That means I won’t handle tuning-related work beyond accepting orders. It may look like I do many different things, but when I’m working, I focus on one thing at a time (laughs).

I’ve updated my to-do list for when the drone work is done. I’ve had lots of ideas!

Summer Tuning Work in the Early Morning and Evening — Thanks to Our Customers

Good morning! It’s hot every day.

I was tuning skis again at four this morning!
4:00–7:00
16:00–19:30
I work only in the early morning and evening. Tuning is physical work, so the heat is intense. During the day, I take it easy or build skis.

I enjoyed adventures in the mountains, but now, at 46, I’m enjoying a new adventure: supporting my daughters through university with the work I chose because I love it, and with ski building, which I started because I love it so much I went a little crazy.

I can make a living from the winter sports I love and send my children to university thanks to our customers. Thank you so much.

We do very little wholesale and work with passionate shop owners. I can picture each of our customers and everyone connected to the shop. Every one of you helps keep us going.

We’re grateful for the many customers and thriving business. I’ll keep working only within the range where I can know people and give each job the care it deserves. I’m going to enjoy work today, too. My body is pretty beat up!

A Weekend Building Skis with Guests — Workshop To-Dos Before Summer

This weekend I’m building skis with our guests. It’s still cool, and everyone seems comfortable working today. There’s a lot to do before the heat really sets in!

To-dos: finish 50 of the current tuning orders by the end of July and complete the off-season work on my own skis. Repair the old storehouse, seal and trim the walls, install outdoor lights, build a paint booth and router table, install the upstairs stairwell door, level the exterior, build storage, repair the handcart, and make an outdoor table from signboard wood.

Test skis include a mega-fat ski, a second narrow ski, a rebuilt snowboard, a metal ski, and a touring ski. I’ll also work on templates, the design and printing room, the attic workshop, the website, guest room, and tuning room.

A Battlefield Weekend and Workshop To-Dos — Six Months Until Summer Ends

5:50 p.m. Another week done! Weekends are a battlefield, and I’m grateful for it.

Cheers in the workshop, where I can listen to my favorite music in great quality all by myself (笑). The kids have grown up and say all kinds of grown-up things now. Dad can’t be bothered to head home early, so I’m having a beer in my workshop hideaway. Summer came in a flash—only six months left this year!

I milled a lot of lumber this week. My list includes tuning and storing my own skis, remounting bindings, repairing the old storehouse, building test skis, updating templates, setting up the design and printing room, making test pieces, repairing the attic workshop, working on the website, and improving the guest room and tuning space.

Starting with orders received in September, the price of a full ski tune will increase by about ¥1,100.
Snowboard prices will remain unchanged.

Our prices had stayed the same for more than 30 years. With rising costs, a small increase in the income of the tuning craftspeople will help us continue providing our service.

I’ll share the details in September. Thank you for your understanding.

Talking about hope and taking on challenges

A video by someone on social media said, “People who make an effort talk about hope; people who are lazy talk about complaints.” That makes a lot of sense (laughs). I like people who can keep a positive outlook without complaining. I’ll keep taking on all kinds of challenges! I’m excited to see how this new core structure turns out. Just making a few adjustments with a clamp.
