Thirty Years with a Trusted Tuning Machine

While maintaining my machine, I suddenly realized it has been with me for thirty years. I have cared for it and modified it to suit my work. Sometimes, when I see the latest machines, I wonder if mine has fallen behind.

But I once received a board whose base had been exposed after it was tuned at another shop. What matters is not simply how new the machine is. I need to look at the board's condition and understand how its owner wants to ride. Some bases cannot take much more grinding; for someone who loves icy conditions, I may make careful hand adjustments to the edges.

Before I begin, I think back to my conversations with each customer: where they ride, what kind of snow they like, and what feel they are looking for. I try to picture the person and give every board individual attention.

Think of cooking: a cook with three years of experience and the newest kitchen equipment, and a cook who has spent thirty years caring for their tools. The equipment alone does not determine the result. Hearing a customer say, “I went out again,” or “The board really ran,” is what makes me happiest.

After the summer break, this season's work starts on September 1. Please come visit the workshop. I know I may have to replace the machine someday, but for now, we'll keep going together (laugh).

A Ski Made from Japanese Wood: NAOTO’s 40th Anniversary Build

The first ski made in this season’s workshop program was for NAOTO, a telemark skier who traveled from Kanazawa to work with us. He commissioned it to mark his many years of skiing. His grandchild wrote the signature for the 40th-anniversary mark, and it is adorable.

The beautiful cypress runs through the center, with the slightly heavier Noto hiba around it, Tateyama cedar at both ends, and bamboo (moso bamboo) for the sidewalls. All the wood is from Japan.

Graphics are part of a ski or snowboard’s performance, too. We often end up with a clear finish, partly because, in every workshop course, participants choose and get to know the wood, work with me to mill it, and assemble the core. I’m particular about helping people learn about wood, so participation is mandatory (laughs).

You grow attached to the wood you chose. When it is carefully assembled and built, it naturally becomes beautiful. NAOTO’s careful work brought beauty to every detail.

And of course, it rides wonderfully. I can’t explain the theory or the reason, but perhaps “it makes you grin and say, ‘Whoa!’” gets the feeling across.

I run this workshop because I want people to know how amazing Japanese wood is. Japan has an environment where abundant trees grow, and a rich history, culture, and craft tradition of living alongside nature and wood. I believe it is the best in the world.

I wish more people could understand that. I want to share it with customers overseas—and above all, I wish everyone in Japan would try DIY!

I got a little carried away. Back to the ski.

It has a fairly high camber, a flat tail, and a front rocker. I think the bend settled where we intended. The ski is still stiff and the camber is high, but as it ages, I believe it will become the ski we envisioned and bring NAOTO many happy years.

This beautiful piece reminded me that a carefully aligned core, centered precisely in the ski, can be the finest graphic of all.

All In Until the End of July — Ski Building and My Updated To-Do List

Hey everyone! I haven’t been seeing people much lately. People tell me they hesitate to reach out because I look busy. Thank you—that’s exactly right (laughs). I’m not good at small talk and can be too direct, sometimes hurting people, so it may be better not to meet up (laughs).

I’m going all in through the end of July. Counting backward, now is the time to do it. My daily routine: wake at 3:30; breakfast 6:30–7:15; lunch 12:00–13:30; bath, dinner, relax, sleep at 21:00. I spend every spare moment building skis. No drinking parties; lunch gatherings are okay. I’m going all the way!

Updated To-Do List

Earthen storehouse workshop: Repair earthquake-cracked exterior walls; seal gaps after plastering; add trim to sliding doors; install outdoor lights; build an outdoor shed.

Prototype skis — the exciting project right now: Build many boards and hold a demo day! (1) Mega-fat ski, darkmatter210, perhaps 160 mm waist; partial black finish with a window and white silkscreen logo; decide between a psycho-shaped template; lightweight powder-flex core; 2 mm flat camber or full rocker. (2) Narrow ski No. 2 Type R; bubinga sidewalls, veneer sheet, laser-engraved logo, thicker build; magnolia and zelkova core; cutouts and powder rocker. (3) Rebuild a snowboard with clear laser engraving or printed sheet design, “TOTAN”; cut the core; decide sidecut; Japanese ash and Douglas fir wood-beam core; also a women’s board. (4) Metal alpine ski No. 1, 170 cm, rocker AR, 76 mm waist; dyed fabric, all-white, or clear Titanal; Douglas fir and thin zelkova core with Titanal above and below. (5) Touring ski with Tateyama cedar beam structure, sawara, wenge stringers, and carbon; 112 mm waist; target under 1,700 g. (6) Build three narrow skis. (7) 170 cm full-carbon ski using cedar sapwood. (8) A flexible ski made only of compressed cedar. Goal: eight models and twelve pairs. I also need to think about graphics.

Templates: Update the acrylic templates for binding-area metal and mounting-pocket routing.

Design and printing room: Test laser engraving, roll printing, AI design, roll printer, pigment-ink graphics on a white background, and a silkscreen logo plate.

Attic workshop: Add flat bars to the press frame and test pressing; add lower aluminum bars; adjust templates for the aluminum angle thickness; install door trim; add three steel braces against twisting; design a 3D sole; improve the stopper and rubber hooks.

Web, communications, and marketing: Improve the website, write board descriptions, make flyers and brochures, create interview videos, present the boards as a tourism experience, and develop stories about the wood.

Digital: Build a CAD-based ordering system for the custom course, and explain design points, design creation, and file submission.

Expand the shop and back room: Pour a concrete floor, build the roof base and structure, and make storage and packing space.

Management: Prepare for inbound visitors, improve my English, and finalize the business plan.

Tuning workshop: Apply to replace machines, add plywood walls, and make room for a wax-future area.

New services: Full base-stripping repairs, splitboard conversions, and workshop options such as hot waxing and edge sharpening.

The Router Table Is Finished! A Big To-Do List for Ski Building

The router table with dust collection and a slot is finished! It took about eight hours. Now I can work while collecting the sawdust, and the slot should make the table more useful. Making templates and shaping ski cores ought to be easier. Maybe my DIY woodworking is improving little by little.

This is an “off year.” Instead of focusing on promotion and attracting customers, I'm putting my energy into building my own skis and demo skis, and clearing the to-do list that has been piling up. I get up at 4 a.m. and work through it a little at a time.

There is still plenty to do: repairs and improvements to the earthen-storehouse workshop, an outdoor shed, and the tools. Prototype skis include a mega-fat, a narrow ski, a snowboard, a metal-reinforced ski, and a touring ski made with Tateyama cedar and carbon. I also need to update templates and mill stock for binding plugs; clear and insulate the design and printing space; test laser engraving; and consider a roll printer and inks. The attic workshop and press room need repairs too.

Beyond the workshop, I have web and PR work, an ordering system, CAD-based tools, tourism programs, and workshops to develop. I can't finish it all at once, so first I'll get the tools and spaces in order and tackle what is in front of me.

Getting the Firewood Ready for Winter

This year's firewood work is complete, just before the weather gets hot. We built a new woodshed this year, giving us enough room to keep two winters' worth of wood. That lets us settle into a two-year drying cycle.

From October through April, we keep the wood stove burning. Winter is cold, but I enjoy the stove and get to ski. I'm already looking forward to winter!
